In many ways, this revolution feels reminiscent of previous technological shifts.

Let’s take a step back and reflect on how we got to this point. The internet was created from a desire for open communication and the free exchange of ideas, but as it evolved, so did the monetisation. The early days of the web were marked by blogs and forums where individuals expressed themselves authentically. Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves in a paradox. While we have the tools to connect and share like never before, we are now confronted with a flood of content that is increasingly artificial.

Imagine an system that’s fed an ever-growing amount of synthetic data. As more AI-generated content floods the web, there’s an increasing chance that future models will be trained on content that lacks the nuance, complexity, and unpredictability of human-made material. Over time, this can cause the models to lose their edge. Essentially, they begin to recycle the most probable, and thus most repetitive, choices in their output.

The danger? AI systems start to prioritize efficiency over creativity and innovation.

Researchers have even coined terms to describe this AI vulnerability.

“Model collapse” describes this degradation, while Model Autophagy Disorder (or MAD) is a term that Rice and Stanford researchers introduced to explain how AIs cannibalize their own outputs. It’s as if the system gets stuck in a feedback loop, feeding on its own content until it no longer produces anything valuable. The results are less diverse and, eventually, less useful.

Then there’s the metaphor of the Habsburg AI, where generative models trained predominantly on AI-generated data become, in a sense, deformed versions of themselves. Like an inbred genetic pool, these models become limited, prone to exaggerations, and unable to produce the rich, authentic outputs they were initially capable of. It’s a chilling prospect for the future of artificial intelligence.

This isn’t just an academic issue. If companies rely too heavily on AI-generated data to train future iterations of their models, we could end up with an entire ecosystem of AIs producing increasingly bland, redundant content. For example, labeling AI-generated content or developing detection tools can play a significant role in maintaining clarity and trust. It’s not about vilifying AI; it’s about developing an environment where consumers can confidently engage with content, knowing exactly what they are interacting with. As AI continues to evolve, it’s crucial that we foster this sense of transparency. Consumers need to be able to recognize the authentic human voice in the digital cacophony and value it accordingly. In doing so, we ensure that AI supports creativity without diluting the emotional depth and originality that human input provides.

It’s about the future of digital experiences. As AI-generated content floods into every corner of the internet, once again, we must prioritise authenticity and creativity above all else. The temptation to let algorithms take over is real, but the cost of letting AI overshadow human expression would be too high.
